Amman is built over many hills, with a Roman Theatre in the old downtown and the Citadel above it, where the Temple of Hercules and the Umayyad Palace look out over the city. Rainbow Street and Jabal Al Weibdeh are good for cafés and evening walks.

The city is the natural base for Jordan. Jerash, one of the best preserved Roman cities in the Middle East, is under an hour away, and the Dead Sea, the lowest point on land, is about an hour's drive. Petra and Wadi Rum are around three to four hours south.

Spring and autumn are the best seasons, with mild days ideal for sightseeing.
