Thermal baths, a grand parliament and two cities on either side of the Danube.
Budapest was formed in 1873 by joining Buda, on its hills, with Pest, on the flat bank opposite, and the Danube between them is lined with landmarks. The Hungarian Parliament Building, one of the largest in Europe, faces Buda Castle and the Fisherman's Bastion across the water.
The city sits on more than a hundred thermal springs, and bathing is a local pastime. The Széchenyi baths, with their yellow pavilions and outdoor pools, are open all year.
In the old Jewish quarter, ruin bars fill abandoned buildings, and the Great Market Hall is the place to try paprika, salami and lángos.
