Essaouira is a laid back walled town on Morocco's Atlantic coast. Its medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has whitewashed houses with blue shutters, art galleries and workshops of thuya wood craftsmen.
The Skala du Port, an old sea bastion lined with cannons, looks over a harbour full of blue fishing boats, and grilled fish at the port stalls is a local ritual. The long beach south of town is popular for kitesurfing and windsurfing thanks to the steady trade winds.
The climate is mild all year, rarely very hot even in summer.
